Graphic Design Education Cannot Stand Still in the Age of AI

If we continue teaching graphic design as though the industry has not changed, we risk losing both students’ confidence and employers’ interest.
Students will increasingly ask a reasonable question: Why invest years in a program if its main promise is teaching tasks that widely available tools can already assist with or automate?
We cannot answer that question by defending familiar course structures. We must demonstrate how design education prepares graduates to contribute beyond routine production.
Artificial intelligence, accessible programming tools such as Python, and increasingly capable creative software are changing what people can produce. Access to these tools does not automatically create expertise, but it does challenge the value of an education built primarily around software operation.
Our responsibility is to raise the level of education accordingly.
The foundation still matters
After reviewing Ontario’s September 2014 Graphic Design Program Standard, I do not believe we should discard its foundations.
The document already includes typography, photography, illustration, design thinking, user experience, web production, motion graphics, project management, ethics and professional development.
Its nine vocational learning outcomes provide a strong framework. It also leaves colleges room to determine course structures and incorporate emerging technologies.
The opportunity is to modernize how students demonstrate those outcomes.
Typography remains essential when AI produces awkward lettering. Composition matters when generated images lack hierarchy. Research matters when a visually impressive concept misunderstands its audience.
The more easily we can generate content, the more carefully we must teach students to evaluate it.
The employment challenge deserves an honest response
The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 reports that surveyed employers expect 39% of workers’ core skills to change by 2030. It also identifies growing demand for AI and technological literacy alongside creative thinking, analytical thinking and lifelong learning. This supports a clear educational direction: technical capability and human judgment must develop together.
Adding one optional AI workshop to an otherwise unchanged program will not adequately address that challenge.
What should change in the curriculum?
I recommend six connected priorities.
1. AI-assisted design and creative direction
Students should learn to use generative tools within a complete design process.
That includes interpreting a brief, developing references, exploring alternatives, identifying weak output, refining the work and delivering production-ready files.
Assessment should reveal why a student selected one direction and rejected another. A prompt alone tells us very little about design competence.
2. UX/UI and working digital experiences
Students need experience with user research, information architecture, responsive interfaces, accessibility and usability testing.
They should understand how a design behaves when someone actually uses it.
A graduate who can explain a user problem, build a prototype and improve it through testing offers stronger evidence of capability than a portfolio containing only attractive screens.
3. Creative technology and automation
Programming belongs in design education where it helps students solve design problems.
Python can support tasks such as organizing assets, processing data and automating repetitive production. HTML, CSS and basic JavaScript can help students understand and build digital experiences.
The objective is practical technical literacy. Students should know enough to collaborate with developers, inspect AI-assisted code and recognize when specialist support is necessary.
4. Motion, marketing and measurement
Students should work with motion design, short-form video, landing pages, advertising creative and email communication.
They should also learn how to evaluate performance.
Did people understand the message? Could they complete the intended action? What did a usability test reveal? Did an experiment provide enough evidence to justify a change?
Commercial design education should connect visual decisions with audience needs and measurable outcomes, while acknowledging that design is only one influence on business results.
5. Ethics and professional responsibility
AI introduces additional questions about privacy, consent, attribution, licensing, representation and authenticity.
Students need structured opportunities to examine those questions and document their decisions.
Professional readiness includes knowing what information should never enter an unapproved tool, when generated imagery could mislead an audience, and when a project requires legal or specialist review.
6. Portfolio evidence and real-client experience
I would replace a large gallery of disconnected assignments with a smaller collection of substantial case studies.
Each should explain the problem, research, design decisions, technical contribution, testing and lessons learned.
A final capstone could bring these skills together through a real business or community brief, supported by client feedback and an industry review panel.
Students should graduate with evidence that they can manage revisions, communicate clearly and deliver within realistic constraints.
We must also make room for depth
Modernization cannot mean adding every new tool to an already crowded timetable.
Colleges should reduce repetitive software exercises, integrate related assignments and allow students to develop a specialization after establishing shared foundations.
Faculty need training, appropriate resources and time to redesign assessment. Students need equitable access to the tools the program requires.
Without those conditions, curriculum reform can become a longer list of expectations rather than a better education.
The real test is graduate readiness
No curriculum can guarantee employment. However, we can improve how convincingly graduates demonstrate their value.
We should prepare students who can think independently, create with AI, correct its output and decide when not to use it.
That requires continuous curriculum review informed by employers, graduates, faculty and students themselves.
If our programs remain static while professional expectations evolve, their relevance will weaken.
Students are investing in their future. Our curriculum must demonstrate that we are investing in it too.
What should every graphic design graduate be able to demonstrate before entering today’s workplace?
